Monifa, a young African girl, has recently arrived to New Zealand as a refugee from Burundi. Haunted by her past, she struggles to adapt to her new life with ageing adoptive parents. On the way to school, Monifa encounters a local Polynesian boy. Fascinated by the new person in the neighbourhood he sets out to get to know her better, and in doing so he helps Monifa to accept her life in the present.
