It is 1977, in white middle class New Zealand, land of endless summers, Dads who are always at work and Mums who stay home and look after the kids. 11-year-old Josie Spratt dreams of someday swimming butterfly at the Commonwealth Games. On the day of the school swimming championships, things don't seem that bad: Mum's made Josie a special new pair of swimming togs, her big sister Virginia has just got her first love bite and Mr Rodgers, down at the dairy has an offer for Josie that other kids would kill for. However, all is not as it seems. Shiny on the outside, rotten in the middle, Josie finds out the hard way that growing up isn't easy.
