The New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC) supports exceptional screen stories that reflect Aotearoa and reach audiences here and around the world. We are looking for an experienced Chief Legal Counsel to lead our Legal and Business Affairs function and provide trusted legal and commercial advice across the organisation.
About the role
As Chief Legal Counsel, you will lead our legal advisers and work closely with the Chief Executive and NZFC Board. You will provide pragmatic, commercially focused advice that supports sound decision-making and pragmatically manages risk in NZFC’s role as a government funder of screen productions.
This is a senior role at the center of New Zealand’s screen sector.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and develop the Legal and Business Affairs team
- Provide strategic legal and commercial advice across NZFC operations
- Negotiate and oversee production financing and funding agreements
- Manage legal risk and ensure robust systems, processes, and drafting
- Understand obligations under the Official Information Act and Privacy Act
- Build strong relationships across the screen industry and government
You will bring:
- Admission as a lawyer with a current New Zealand practising certificate
- Significant experience practicing entertainment law in New Zealand or a comparative foreign jurisdiction
- At least 10 years’ experience in the screen production industry
- Proven people leadership experience and strong commercial judgement
- Confidence advising at executive and Board level
