You can increase your rebate from 20% to 25% by meeting some additional criteria. 

Here’s how to access that additional 5%.


Eligibility

Minimum QNZPE: NZ$30 million or more, this applies to all formats – feature films, television, and other non-theatrical productions.

Effective 1 January 2026, the minimum QNZPE for Live Action Productions will reduce to $20 million, and a PDV Uplift will be added - more details to come.

Points-based system

Productions must achieve a minimum of 40 points out of a maximum 85 points.

Points are available in the following areas:

  • Sustainability
  • New Zealand production activity
  • New Zealand personnel                                     
  • Skills and talent development                                              
  • Innovation and infrastructure                              
  • Marketing, promoting and showcasing New Zealand

Application process

One

Before filming

You must first register with us before the start of prinicpal photography.

Two

Provisional Certification

Once registered 5% Uplift applicants must also apply for a Provisional Certificate before principal photography begins.

A Provisional Certificate gives you a non-binding opinion on whether you're eligible for the Rebate.

Three

Final Certification

  • Submit your final application within six months of completion.
  • Include an independent auditor's report from one of our approved providers.
  • We'll review your claim with an external consultant to confirm eligibility.
  • Once your QNZPE reaches NZ$50 million, you can apply for an interim payment.
