We are committed to supporting the diverse voices that reflect our country.
We strongly believe the films we invest in must represent ALL the people of New Zealand. This means encouraging stories that are not seen every day on screen.
Committed to diversity
We are strongly committed to increasing diversity in the film industry. We have developed new initiatives that support filmmakers from all backgrounds and encourage them to express their unique voices through original storytelling.
Māori, Pacific Island, Asian communities and women
He Ara is a development fund committed to presenting more Māori and Pacific Island stories on screen.
In 2018 the NZFC introduced its Te Rautaki Māori (Māori Screen Strategy) and hired a Pou Whakahaere to deliver on its aims. A range of development and production funding programmes to support Māori filmmakers have been introduced, with more being developed.
In 2017 a new role, Asia Outreach Executive, was established to connect storytellers from New Zealand's Asian communities and to raise their awareness of the New Zealand screen sector and the opportunites it can offer.
Women remain under-represented in our screen industry so we have introduced programmes, including bespoke production funding initiatives, to assist women to build sustainable careers.
