Feature Production
How can I apply for funding for my feature film?
The first step is to ensure your project has significant New Zealand content as determined by reference to section 18 of the New Zealand Film Commission Act. You should then attach an experienced producer to undertake the application process. Applications that don’t have a sufficiently experienced producer won’t be accepted.
What counts as an "experienced producer"?
A producer applying to the NZFC for production funding must have a proven track-record in feature film production or a thorough and successful record of producing short films, high-end television drama, and/or advertisements. If your project is a low-budget feature, a theatrical documentary or solely for post-production funding we may accept a lesser level of experience.
How much money can I apply for?
Each project is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. As a general rule, the NZFC would not expect to put more than $2 million into a fiction feature film or $1 million into a low-budget feature or theatrical documentary. If you are applying solely for post-production funding, the level of funding will be dependent on the budget level but would usually be no more than $500,000. The prior attachment of private investment and market pre-sales is encouraged, particularly if your film has commercial elements (e.g. higher budget, experienced director, name cast, etc).
Can I apply for financing for the whole budget?
The NZFC may consider 100% financing of low-budget features or theatrical documentaries but you should show that you have made attempts to secure other funding sources.
Is there a form I need to fill in?
Yes. An application coversheet must be provided with each application and is part of the Feature Film Production and Post-Production Guidelines and can also be downloaded in Word format from the Feature Production page.
What are the deadlines for making applications?
Board Meetings are held six times a year. The deadlines for applications are available here:
http://www.nzfilm.co.nz/AboutUs/Board.aspx
Who decides whether or not I get funding?
The NZFC Board makes all production funding decisions based on staff recommendations.
When will I be notified of the result?
Producers are notified by telephone or email within 24 hours of a decision being made.
Does the NZFC fund documentaries?
The NZFC will consider applications for production funding for theatrical documentaries, however these are not our core focus. Please see our Feature Film Production and Post-Production Guidelines for further details on what is required.
Can I apply for single project production funding for a low-budget feature?
Yes, but you should also consider whether your project might be better suited to the Escalator scheme.
I've got a great script and I think Peter Jackson would be the ideal director for it. What should I do?
Wingnut Films have advised us that Peter does not read any unsolicited material sent to him and is not looking to take on any new projects. His current schedule of productions will keep him busy for many years to come.
