Seed Development Fund
Can I submit a draft script that differs from that of the treatment?
Yes, the script is just to show you are capable of writing a feature film (normally 80-120 pages long).
I would like to submit extra documents (such as a film trailer) in my entry, what format is most appropriate?
You can submit a Quicktime file, DVD or send us a link to an online video.
Is it possible to submit the first few pages of a script rather than a treatment?
No. A five-page outline is required to give us a sense of the whole story - and reduce reading time! This outline should be a maximum of 2500 words.
Should I send my treatment in courier 12 like a script?
No need - any (readable!) font will do.
My outline is 12 pages long - is that OK?
No - please give us a five-page version.
I've written a novel/radio play/graphic novel/musical version of the story. Can I submit that instead of an outline?
No, sorry.
I haven't written a feature script but I've written a novel/radio play/graphic novel/TV show. Can I submit that instead of a sample screenplay?
No, sorry.
Do you read the sample screenplay?
No, this is required solely as evidence of long form screenwriting ability and will not form part of your application’s qualitative assessment.
When can I apply to the Seed Development Fund?
SDF applications are considered quarterly with application deadlines in January, April, July and October annually.
For financial year 2011/2012, application deadlines are 5pm on each of:
· Friday 14 October 2011
· Friday 13 January 2012
· Friday 13 April 2012
What file format should I email the final documents in?
Please send your application (including treatment) in PDF or Word form in a single file and your sample screenplay in a second file to development@nzfilm.co.nz
Should I just email it? or would you like hard copies too?
Email is just fine thanks.
I'm attached as a writer to an Early Development Fund [or other] application. Can I separately apply to the Seed Development Fund for a different project at the same time?
Yes. Just bear in mind the reporting requirement if you're successful (see below).
Can I submit more than one application at a time?
No. Writers may submit only one application at a time. Successful applicants must submit a report of the work they have done within six months of receiving funding, or at the time of applying with a new project, whichever is the earlier. This report may be a completed draft or an extended outline. We recognise that in some cases the outcome may be a decision to put the project on hold. In this case the report should detail the process that has led to this decision. It should also outline the strategy the writer has employed, or is intending to employ to move the project to the next stage.
That word 'loan' sounds scary. When do I have to pay it back?
Your loan will become part of the development loan that will eventually get taken on by the production company that makes the film. It gets paid back on the first day of principal photography. If the film does not get made we don't come chasing anyone for the money.
