When 12 year old Ben sets out to win the local trolley derby in memory of his father, he learns what matters in life when he is forced to battle cheating opponents, dodgy loan sharks and a mother who has banned him from the race.
Kiwi Flyer is inspired by the Nelson Trolley Derby which takes place annually in February/March. The derby is an institution in the Nelson community and attracts a crowd of thousands every year. Eclectically designed trolleys of all shapes and sizes, made from a range of materials, race down Collingwood Street – the aim, to be crowned ‘Monarch of the Hill’.
The film was shot entirely in and around Nelson at the top of New Zealand’s South Island in August/ September 2011.
