For thousands of years the Canadian Eskimo Dog enabled the Inuit to survive in the Arctic. Capable of pulling their own weight, the dogs hauled sleds, gave protection from polar bears, subsisted on scanty rations and were able to survive in minus 60 degrees celsius conditions. Then came petrol powered skidoos, and overnight these remarkable animals became redundant. Today they are on the brink of extinction, the rarest registered breed in the world.
