Trainee Feature Director Scheme
NZFC has formalised a Trainee Feature Director (TFD) Scheme.
The rationale for the scheme is that the first time a NZ director steps on to a feature film set may well be to direct their own debut feature film. While s/he might have extensive short, TVC, music video, TV or broadcast production credits, NZFC believes that feature production experience – with its many specific demands – is critical for the director’s professional development.
NZFC will make available up to NZ$10,000 as a grant to be used for the attachment of a TFD on NZFC-financed dramatic feature films with production budgets above NZ$500,000. The grant will cover a minimum of 14 weeks’ work attachment through prep, production and post and associated travel and expenses as negotiated.
To be eligible for TFD attachment, candidates must:
- be NZ citizens or residents; and either
- have a short film that has screened at an A-list festival; or
- be attached to a feature film in development with NZFC, or both.
The TFD role will be tied to the director unit and include assisting and supporting as directed, shadowing and being “eyes and ears” throughout the process. We recognise that every production is different, so the exact scope of the role will be determined through consultation between the candidate, director and producer.
We encourage producer and director teams to put forward a candidate well-suited to a specific production, or we can assist with candidate suggestions. In either case, the fit needs to be right for all parties. The role must demonstrate clear benefit for the production and for the candidate’s development as a future feature film director.
Applications should include:
- a letter from the producer;
- candidate C.V.; and
- traineeship schedule and budget.
On successful application a letter of agreement will be required between parties (NZFC, producer, director and candidate) to trigger payment.
