Feature Development Overview

The NZFC provides funding for script development for feature dramas and feature documentaries. Read on to find out more about what you can apply for and how to apply.

The NZFC appreciates that scripts are at different stages of development and have designed a funding system that aims to cater to scripts at all stages.

We invite filmmakers to apply at any stage they feel applicable and do not require that they pass through any or all stages in order to apply for production funding. We suggest that filmmakers do not accrue an excessive development loan as this must be paid back on the first day of principal photography. We ask that you read thoroughly through the guidelines and FAQ on the type of funding for which you wish to apply. Should you meet the requirements you may apply for funding from any one of the following.

Writer Development Loan

This stage is designed specifically for writers, who may apply for funding of up to $7,500 to develop a script or treatment.

Early Development Fund

At this stage, and any further stages, the project must have a producer attached. It is the producer who will make applications for funding. You may receive a maximum of $60,000 (including any Writer Development Loan) at this stage and generally these applications are for no more than $20,000 at one time.

Advanced Development Fund

This stage is designed for projects that have a director attached and any basic story problems should be solved. The focus at this stage should be refining the script to suit the target audience and developing a strategy to package and finance the film. Projects applying to the Advanced Development Fund may receive a maximum of $150,000 (including any funds already received through the Writer Development Loan, Early Development Fund or devolved development funds).

Documentary Development

Documentary producers may apply to the Early Development Fund for development funding of up to $5,000 at a time, with a cap of $15,000. Directors who also have a documentary producing track record may apply for an initial amount of up to $5,000 for documentary development.

Evaluation
The evaluation of applications for script development funding is of necessity an inexact science but we aim to be open and transparent about our processes and the reasons for our decisions.
