Annual Reports

Here are the latest NZFC Annual Reports.  The NZFC has just released our 2009 report.

The NZFC’s annual report 2008/09, tabled in Parliament on Friday, notes the continuing success of New Zealand films.

Releasing the report, Chair Patsy Reddy said “This reporting period was bracketed by two of our most popular recent films:  at the beginning Second Hand Wedding which carried over its success from the previous financial year to finish with a theatrical audience of nearly 190,000 people and a strong DVD launch; and at the end The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls which was seen by 177,000 people and is the highest grossing documentary ever to screen theatrically in New Zealand.”

Ms Reddy also highlighted the success of short films The Six Dollar Fifty Man and This is Her

The Six Dollar Fifty Man had its world premiere at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival winning the ‘Special Distinction’ Award. This is Her has won a number of international festival awards including ‘Best Comedy Short’ at the Academy Awards qualifying Aspen Shortsfest,”

The NZFC committed production financing to seven new feature films and nine short films during the financial year.  It also supported the completion of nine digital features.    Six new films were released in cinemas around the country for the period, and digitisation has been completed for 31 of the 65 New Zealand features earmarked for archival restoration and digitisation over the next two financial years.  Nine of these films have been released as part of Screenline’s NZ Cinema Collection.

Ms Reddy reflected it had been a busy year for the NZFC, with the implementation of guidelines and processes for the administration of SPIF, an independent review of the sales and marketing activities of NZ Film, and the Ministerial review of the NZFC led by Peter Jackson and David Court.

“As with all organisations, the NZFC needs constantly to re-evaluate its effectiveness in fulfilling its goals.  Both the Board and the NZFC staff look forward to the findings of the Ministerial review and any recommendations that may come from it.”
